Due Wednesday, March 25

Read and annotate the excerpt from Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Enrenreich. Make sure to write 2-3 discussion questions.

For extra credit:

Comment on the lives of the people that Enrenreich worked with. You may also comment on the working conditions they had. Finally, Enrenreich allotted herself $1,300 in start-up money before she began her life as a minimum wage earner. How did this set her apart from her co-workers, if st all?

You may also make connections to our essential questions.

  1. Enrenreich heard the stories of many employees at the restaurant. I think these stories are very realistic and none of them probably haven't changed today, considering the economy that we have today. I think that these employees show what happens to people who are not in power; they are stuck working for people who are at the top and don't care about their well-being and what happens to them once they are at home. This reality is harsh, but unfortunately very true. The start up money that Enrenreich had definitely sets her apart from the other employees just because she had a head start. Some of these employees earn only $1,300 in a month. If she did her little "experiment" without the start-up money, her efforts to expose jobs that pay minimum wage would have been more valuable.-Racquel

  2. I agree with Raquel becuase this is what some families have to do to get by. I work in an eviroment where the employees get minimum wages. I have as a part time to save up, but half of these people work their to support their families and pay bills with that small amount of change that they work for. SO i can understand where the author is coming from. It definatley is a wake up call to me because i do not want to end up that way.
The 1,300 start up that she had is definatley a factor in her experiment because these people did not have start up money at all. So again i agree with Racquel when she says "her efforts to expose jobs that pay minimum wage would have been more valuable"

My question is Whats nest after this??
